Every Day Use

After 10 years ...

Maggie:

I am hemming my dress to perfection. Mama had spent two years saving up for this day. We had saved up 300 dollars, selling meat and fishing bait, Mama had picked up an extra job and tomorrow was the day, my day. I am ready to marry John Thomas and move into a slightly better home. I am scared that the dress will highlight my flaws and John will change his mind. Everyone is coming to the wedding even Dee, we had not spoken since the quilt incident and I was ready to atone for what had happened. I will give her the quilts as a peace offering, even though she would never use them she will appreciate the gesture.

Dee:

Tomorrow I will see her, in her hideous self-hemmed dress. Mama will probably convince her that she looks great but the audience will know the truth and hopefully that Thomas boy will back out before she gets down the aisle. I'm only going there to get what I deserved the last time I went.

Mama had denied those quilts from me but I will get them this time once in for all. Maggie is an awful girl, but she is weak and I can break her down. Mama and Maggie don't understand what those quilts truly mean. Maggie is m y sister, but she is not like me, she doesn’t appreciate and treasure the things that our family has. But I do.
